Seamless Parking Garage Exterior
Due to the development of the new Calvary Adelaide Hospital—the largest private hospital in South Australia, there was a need for more parking space for patients, visitors and employees.
Tectvs came to Kaynemaile with an idea… to create a façade for a parking garage development on Angas Street that looked like an old leather couch—a unique approach to the usually plain aesthetics of a structure like this. As Kaynemaile is built on collaboration and pushing the boundaries of design, we were happy to engineer a solution.
The eight-story car park, which features office space on the top floor and retail space on the ground floor, was clad using only eight individual Kaynemaile screens—the biggest being a seamless 58 metres wide x 16 metres high.
We developed disc-like ‘buttons’ and a fixing system that pulled deeply into the mesh façade—creating the couch-like look. These screens sat on two sides of the parking structure. The buttons give dynamic colour and shadow changes to the screens as the light moves from day to night across the building’s faces.
Another consideration in the design process was the installation process of the Kaynemaile screens. As the parking garage is located on a busy street, full-closure wasn’t possible, and access to a side street was difficult. With access and speed of install in mind, we designed our fixing systems to allow these large screens to be lifted and fixed off in a day, significantly reducing road closures and disruptions to the surrounding neighbourhood.
As Kaynemaile is extremely lightweight (only 0.6lbs per ft2 / 3kg per m2) compared to metal products, screens can be made to any height or width with no joins or seams. Because of this benefit, installation is fast and less sub-frame is required meaning less cost to our clients.
As well as great airflow characteristics Kaynemaile’s solar reduction properties mean these large screens provide up to 70 percent reduction in solar gain, reducing heat transfer into the building significantly.
